Biafra - Republic

On may the 27th 1967, General Yakubu Gowon, head of the Federal Military Goverment of Nigeria, created three states from the Eastern Region of Nigeria. Seperation of the region was undertaken to achieve better regional and ethnic balance. On the 30th of may 1967 Lt. Co. E. O. Ojukuwu proclaimed independance of the eastern region as the Republic of Biafra. Fighting broke out between the Federal Military Goverment and the forces of Lt. Co. E. O. Ojukuwu and continued until Biafra surrendered on the 15th of january 1970. Biafra was again reintegrated  into the Republic of Nigeria.
